Texts from the Ex-Tax line

The line only ever answers you. It never texts anyone first.

What the line is

Ex-Tax is an iPhone app for adults who want to stop texting an ex. The app puts the Ex-Tax line, one US toll-free number, on the ex's contact card on the person's own iPhone. When they text or call that card, it reaches the line instead, and the line answers with a short automatic reply. The ex never gets anything from Ex-Tax.

How you opt in

Only people who sign up in the Ex-Tax app get replies, and they start the conversation themselves:

  1. Create an account in the app

You sign in with Apple, confirm you're 18 or older, and agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

  2. Run the line test

On the "Text Alex. I'll pick up." screen, the app shows a one-time code and opens your own Messages app with it, like EXTAX 4F7K2Q. You choose to send it.

  3. The line confirms

Your text links your phone number to your account, and the line replies once: "Ex-Tax here. Line test passed. Texts and calls to your ex's card come to me now. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out."

  4. After that, it only answers

Each time you text your ex's card, the line answers once, briefly. If you never text it, it never texts you.

What it sends

  • Only automatic replies to texts you send. No marketing, no promotions, and never a price or a sales pitch.
  • How many depends on you: one reply for each text you send to the line.
  • If a text mentions a crisis, the reply lists help lines: 911, 988 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
  • Message and data rates may apply.

Examples:

  • "This is Ex-Tax. Your ex never got this, and never will from this number. Open Ex-Tax if you need options. Not okay? Call or text 988."
  • "Still not delivered. Your ex never got this."

Stop or get help any time

Text STOP to the line and it stops replying to your number. Text START to turn replies back on. Text HELP for help, or email support@extax.app. The line answers: "Ex-Tax: this line only answers texts you send it. Help: support@extax.app. Reply STOP to opt out. Msg & data rates may apply. In danger? Call 911."

Stopping replies doesn't end your pact: texts to your ex's card still reach the line, not your ex. To end it, use Settings > End the pact in the app.
